The Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA) has suspended its strike action, just hours after it began, following assurances from management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Education stakeholders are being urged to reconsider the structure of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) following concerns that the current timetable places excessive pressure on candidates. Parents and guardians of students at Wisdom Academy in Jamestown are demanding urgent intervention from authorities after the school’s management allegedly collected BECE registration fees but failed to register the candidates for the examination. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called on the West African Examinations Council to review how it transports examination materials. His call follows delays in delivering BECE papers at the Boako M/A Basic School centre in the Western North Region. The Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) has arrested four persons linked to the PDS scandal. The arrests took place last week as part of investigations into the transfer of large sums of money believed to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana. Doctors at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have suspended all Out-Patient Department (OPD) services. The action took effect on May 4, 2026. The Korle Bu Doctors Association announced the decision after a dispute with laboratory staff at the Central Laboratory. KODA said the move is based on patient safety concerns. Three people have died following a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean. The World Health Organization reported one confirmed case and five suspected cases on board the MV Hondius. The vessel was travelling from Argentina to Cape Verde. A 69-year-old British national is in intensive care in Johannesburg. Local officials say he has the virus. Hantavirus spreads mainly through contact with rodents. About 620,000 candidates will begin the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on Monday, May 4. The nationwide exam is conducted by the West African Examinations Council. It will run until May 11. A total of 620,141 candidates from 20,395 schools are expected to take part. WAEC says it has tightened measures to curb examination malpractice.
