Former NPP Parliamentary Candidate Arrested in US Over Alleged Stabbing of Wife

A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate has reportedly been detained in the United States following an alleged domestic violence incident involving his wife.

According to preliminary reports, the former aspirant was taken into custody after authorities responded to an emergency call concerning a stabbing incident at a residential location. The victim, said to be his spouse, was reportedly rushed to a medical facility for treatment. Her current condition has not been officially disclosed.

Police confirmed on Monday that Nortey, 41, of Harrisburg, is facing multiple charges, including attempted homicide, possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Law enforcement officials in the United States have not yet released full details of the incident, and the suspect has not been formally convicted. The matter remains under investigation, and all allegations are subject to due legal process.

News of the detention has triggered widespread reactions in Ghana, particularly within political circles, given the suspect’s previous involvement with the ruling NPP. Party officials have so far refrained from commenting extensively on the matter, noting that it is a personal legal issue being handled by US authorities.

Legal experts have emphasized that under US law, suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. They also caution against public speculation while investigations are ongoing.

The incident has once again brought attention to the broader issue of domestic violence, with advocacy groups urging victims to seek help and encouraging authorities to treat such cases with urgency and sensitivity.

As investigations continue, more details are expected to emerge. For now, both Ghanaian and international observers are watching closely as the legal process unfolds.
