Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Defends 2022–2023 SIM Registration Against Mahama’s Claims

Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has pushed back against remarks by John Mahama concerning the 2022–2023 SIM registration exercise, maintaining that the process was credible and followed due legal procedures.

In a statement released on March 20, 2026, she explained that although she had stayed silent since leaving office, she felt the need to respond after what she described as repeated inaccuracies by the President during his tour of the Bono Region.

According to her, the recent SIM registration was introduced to address shortcomings in the earlier 2010–2011 exercise, which she said lacked a reliable system for verifying users’ identities due to the absence of a nationwide identification database at the time.

She emphasized that the 2022–2023 process was anchored on the Ghana Card and involved a more robust, two-step verification system. This included confirming personal details with the National Identification Authority, followed by biometric data capture such as facial recognition and fingerprint verification.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful insisted that these measures ensured the integrity and credibility of the registration process, contrary to the claims made by the President.
