Google has unveiled its most significant Street View expansion in Ghana since the service was introduced in the country ten years ago, bringing broader coverage and improved image quality to users across the country.
The latest update, announced on Wednesday, introduces high-resolution imagery captured with Google’s next-generation Street View technology. The upgrade allows users to virtually explore more locations across Ghana through Google Maps with greater clarity and detail.
According to Cynthia Wei, Google’s Street View Program Manager, the update represents a major milestone in the company’s efforts to improve digital access to Ghana’s roads, landmarks and cultural attractions.
“We are thrilled to share a major imagery update across Ghana, featuring expanded coverage of the country’s vibrant cities, national highways and historic heritage sites,” she said.
Wider Coverage Across Cities and Highways
The update significantly expands Street View coverage in Accra and Kumasi, giving users improved access to major roads and popular landmarks, including the National Theatre of Ghana and Kejetia Market.
Google has also extended coverage along key highway corridors such as the N10, N12 and N2, making it easier for users to explore routes connecting different parts of the country.
The expanded imagery offers a more comprehensive view of Ghana’s transportation network and supports easier navigation for residents, businesses and travellers.
Spotlight on Tourist and Cultural Attractions
The refreshed Street View imagery showcases several of Ghana’s most notable tourist destinations and heritage sites.
Users can now virtually visit UNESCO World Heritage forts along the Gulf of Guinea, traditional Asante architecture near Kumasi, beaches along the southern coast, the Volta River corridor, botanical gardens and various nature reserves.
Sports fans can also explore the surroundings of major sporting venues, including the Accra Sports Stadium and Baba Yara Stadium.
Google said the update forms part of its ongoing commitment to making Google Maps more accurate, informative and useful while promoting access to Ghana’s cultural and tourism assets.
New Camera Technology Deployed
As part of the expansion, Google has introduced its latest ultra-portable Street View camera in Ghana for the first time.
The advanced camera system is already capturing fresh imagery, with particular attention being given to coastal cities such as Cape Coast and Takoradi.
Google said the new technology will enable more frequent updates and deliver higher-quality images across the country.
How Users Can Access Street View
Perry Nelson, Site Lead for Google Ghana, encouraged users to explore the newly updated imagery through Google Maps.
Street View can be accessed by searching for a location on Google Maps and selecting the Street View option. Desktop users can drag the yellow “Pegman” icon onto highlighted roads, while mobile users can tap a location pin or activate the Street View layer to view available imagery.
The update is expected to enhance navigation, support tourism promotion and provide users around the world with a richer digital experience of Ghana’s cities, landmarks and natural attractions.
