The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has directed the temporary closure of the Kaneshie Footbridges following an inspection that uncovered serious structural defects.

The decision, issued on Wednesday, is aimed at safeguarding lives as urgent repair works commence. During the inspection, traders and commuters occupying the bridges and surrounding areas were instructed to vacate immediately to allow for renovation activities.

The Mayor emphasised that public safety remains a top priority, especially in light of recent incidents involving compromised structures across the city. He warned that individuals who disregard the directive or attempt to use the bridges unlawfully will face legal consequences.

He indicated that the Assembly will utilise its Internally Generated Funds to begin preliminary repair works while seeking additional financial support from central government. According to him, sections of the bridges have significantly deteriorated, with exposed metal reinforcements and cracked concrete highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Residents have also been encouraged to report unsafe buildings and developments within their communities, with assurances of swift enforcement of engineering and safety standards.

As part of a broader initiative, the mayor announced plans to collaborate with other municipal authorities to conduct joint inspections and enforcement exercises across key areas, including Adenta, School Junction, Dansoman, and Agbogbloshie. The exercise will target unsafe structures, with non-compliant buildings facing possible demolition.

Officials present during the inspection noted that prolonged occupation of the footbridges by traders has contributed to maintenance challenges, resulting in visible deterioration such as rusted components and damaged structural elements.

Engineering authorities have confirmed that the bridges are in poor condition and require immediate attention, backing the decision to partially close them. In the interim, alternative pedestrian routes, including designated crossing points along the Dr. Busia Highway, will be provided to ensure safe movement while rehabilitation works are underway.

The Mayor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, enforcing regulations, and enhancing public safety as part of efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable city.
