Bawumia calls for prosecution of NDC organiser to be discontinued

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General’s Office to discontinue the prosecution of an NDC organiser in Agona West who was arrested over alleged false publications and offensive comments made about him.

Dr. Bawumia said he neither lodged the complaint nor authorised the arrest and prosecution of the individual.

    Bawumia distances himself from case

In a statement issued on July 22, 2026, the former Vice President expressed concern that the matter was being pursued in his name despite his lack of involvement in initiating the complaint.

He subsequently appealed to the relevant authorities to discontinue the prosecution.

According to the statement, Dr Bawumia also indicated that he had forgiven the individual involved and did not wish for the case to continue.

His comments have drawn attention because the prosecution was reportedly linked to alleged remarks made about him.

Calls for tolerance in political discourse

The development has reignited debate about political speech, criticism of public officials and the appropriate response to offensive political commentary.

Some observers view Dr Bawumia’s intervention as a call for restraint and tolerance in Ghana’s political environment, particularly at a time when political rhetoric often generates controversy.

The case has also prompted discussions about whether public figures should pursue legal action over criticism and insults or resolve such matters through dialogue and forgiveness.

    Attention turns to authorities

With Dr Bawumia publicly distancing himself from the case and requesting its discontinuation, attention is now focused on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General’s Office.

The two institutions will determine the next steps regarding the prosecution.

The matter has further highlighted broader conversations about freedom of expression, political accountability and the balance between protecting reputations and preserving open political debate in Ghana.
