Adu Sarpei urges fans to stop comparing current Black Stars to 2010 team

Former Ghana international Han Adu Sarpei has called on fans to avoid comparisons between the current Black Stars squad and the celebrated 2010 team that reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup.

Following Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 tournament, expectations among supporters have risen sharply, with many hoping the team can surpass the historic milestone achieved in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

However, Adu Sarpei, who was part of that 2010 squad, believes such comparisons are misplaced, stressing that the two teams are fundamentally different in composition and context.

He noted that the 2010 team benefited from a strong sense of cohesion, having played together for several years before the tournament. According to him, the squad also possessed greater experience and several influential personalities who played key leadership roles.

In contrast, he explained that the current team is still evolving, with new players being integrated and broader structural challenges affecting stability. These include changes within the technical setup and limited continuity in team selection.

He further pointed out that the present squad has faced disruptions in recent competitions, making it more difficult to build the same level of chemistry and confidence enjoyed by the earlier team.

Ghana has been drawn in a competitive group for the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia when the tournament begins on June 11.

As preparations continue, Adu Sarpei’s remarks highlight the need for patience and realistic expectations as the current generation of players seeks to establish its own identity on the global stage.
