The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has forecast light morning showers, mist and afternoon thunderstorms across parts of the country on Friday as an active rainstorm system moves westward from neighbouring Nigeria.
In its 18-hour weather forecast issued at 6:00 a.m., the Agency advised the public to expect changing weather conditions throughout the day, with thunderstorms likely in many areas by the afternoon and evening.
GMET said communities along the coast, including Aflao, Accra, Kasoa, Winneba, Cape Coast, Takoradi and Axim, will begin the day with light rain.
The Agency placed the probability of morning rainfall in these areas at 40%.
Temperatures along the coast are expected to range between 22°C and 24°C in the morning before rising to about 30°C later in the day.
Residents in the middle belt, including Kumasi, Koforidua, Akim Oda, Kwahu Tafo, Obuasi, Tarkwa and Sefwi Bekwai, are expected to wake up to misty conditions.
GMET warned that the mist could reduce visibility, especially in forested and hilly areas.
Temperatures in the zone are forecast to increase from 23°C or 24°C in the morning to a maximum of 33°C in the afternoon.
The northern sector, including Tamale, Bolgatanga, Wa, Yendi, Bole, Damongo, Nalerigu and Jirapa, is expected to remain mostly cloudy during the morning.
However, GMET said rainfall is more likely in Bolgatanga and Nalerigu, where there is a 40% chance of rain.
By the afternoon, the likelihood of thunderstorms will increase, with Wa and Jirapa facing a 60% probability of thunderstorms accompanied by rain.
According to the Agency, the changing weather is being driven by an active rainstorm system over Nigeria that is expected to spread into northern and transitional parts of Ghana.
The Upper West, Upper East, North East, Savannah and Northern regions have been placed under “Be Aware” and, in some areas, “Low Risk” weather alerts.
GMET also expects thunderstorms of varying intensity to develop across southern Ghana later in the day.
Cities including Accra, Kasoa and Ho have a 40% chance of experiencing thunderstorms with rain during the afternoon and evening.
The forecast indicates maximum temperatures of 30°C along the coast, 33°C across the forest and transition belts, and up to 34°C in northern Ghana.
The Agency has advised fishermen and other sea users to exercise caution, warning that sea conditions are expected to remain rough.
GMET urged the public to stay updated with weather forecasts and take the necessary precautions, particularly in areas expected to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
