Ghana Sports Fund urges support for Black Stars after Croatia defeat and Round of 32 qualification

The Administrator of the Ghana Sports Fund, Dr David Kofi Waku, has urged Ghanaians to continue backing the Black Stars following their defeat to Croatia, reminding fans that the team has already secured qualification to the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the Group L encounter in the United States, Dr Waku said the loss should not overshadow Ghana’s successful qualification campaign or the determination displayed by the players throughout the group stage.

He noted that while the Black Stars fell short against Croatia, they had already done enough to book their place in the knockout stages after collecting four points from their opening two matches.

According to him, football should not be judged solely by the final scoreline, adding that the team’s display against Croatia reflected resilience, discipline and a renewed fighting spirit.

“This was more than a football match. I saw a team that fought with pride, discipline and commitment. To me, this is not a defeat but a victory in terms of performance and progress. The results will come if we continue to believe in them,” he said.

Dr Waku appealed to Ghanaians to remain patient with both the players and the technical team, stressing that rebuilding a competitive national side requires confidence, consistency and unwavering public support.

He said qualifying for the Round of 32 was an important achievement and should serve as motivation ahead of the knockout phase rather than a reason for criticism.

“The Black Stars need the support of every Ghanaian at this moment. We must stand behind the team and give them the confidence to continue improving and striving for success,” he added.

Dr Waku also reaffirmed the Ghana Sports Fund’s commitment to supporting sports development in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of creating sustainable funding for sports.

He said the Fund remains committed to providing the financial support needed to develop sporting talent and strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness on the international stage.

With the group stage now concluded, the Black Stars will turn their attention to the Round of 32 as they seek to extend their World Cup campaign despite the setback against Croatia.
