FDA shuts down 16 Accra eateries

The Food and Drugs Authority has escalated its actions from issuing warnings to taking firm enforcement measures, closing down 16 food service establishments in the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, for operating without valid Food Hygiene Permits.

The crackdown comes exactly two weeks after the Authority issued a public notice stating that, effective February 1, all non-compliant facilities would face immediate closure.

In a statement posted to its official Facebook page, the FDA confirmed that it has now taken action against businesses that failed to meet the regulatory deadline.

Among the 16 establishments shuttered during the exercise were several popular spots, including:

    • The Cheesecake House
    • Dolce Frizzante
    • Onda
    • Alora Beach Resort

“Two weeks after our notice to the public… we have taken action,” the FDA stated. “Today, 16 non-compliant food service establishments in the Greater Accra Region… were shut down for failing to meet regulatory requirements.”

The FDA’s directive covers a comprehensive list of food-related businesses. Beyond high-end restaurants and lounges, the enforcement applies to:

    • Hotels and event caterers.
    • Traditional “chop bars” and snack bars.
    • Food vans and bakeries.
    • Online food vendors.
    • Canteens located in schools, hospitals, and offices.

The Authority emphasized that these closures are necessary to maintain the integrity of the food supply chain and protect consumers from potential health risks.

“We remain committed to protecting public health and ensuring that all food service providers operate in strict compliance with good hygiene practices,” the Authority reaffirmed.

The FDA has urged all food service operators who have yet to regularize their documentation to do so immediately to avoid similar enforcement actions.

The shut-down facilities are expected to remain closed until they satisfy all regulatory requirements and obtain a valid Food Hygiene Permit.
