Deputy Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Veronica Commey, has assured that athletes competing at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra are being adequately catered for, dismissing concerns of food rationing.
The issue arose after South African athlete Aiden Smith reportedly complained about treatment at the athletes’ hostel, alleging food shortages.
Responding on Wednesday, Madam Commey said organisers were surprised by the claims but acknowledged that complaints are not unusual at major international sporting events.
“Personally, I was a little taken aback by the concerns over rationing of food. As organisers, we know there will be complaints,” she stated.
She added that officials had inspected the facilities and confirmed that food supplies were sufficient. “I have personally visited the rooms and there is a lot of food available, so we do not know where that claim came from,” she said.
The African Senior Athletics Championships officially began on May 12 at the University of Ghana Stadium and will run until May 19, 2026. The continental competition has brought together athletes from across Africa to compete in various track and field events, with Ghana serving as host nation.
