Mahama hints at Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire joint AFCON bid

President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that Ghana could pursue a joint bid with Côte d’Ivoire to host a future Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as the government moves to improve sports infrastructure across the country.

The President made the remarks during an inspection of the Ho Stadium, where he outlined plans to upgrade at least five stadiums to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards for hosting international competitions.

    Five stadiums targeted

President Mahama said the government is committed to developing sports infrastructure capable of hosting major continental tournaments.

“We want, over the next few years, to have at least five stadiums in this country that can host CAF competitions properly,” he said.

He noted that improved sporting facilities would strengthen Ghana’s chances of hosting another AFCON.

    Ghana eyes another AFCON

Ghana last hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, with matches played in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi and Tamale.

President Mahama said the country is nearing another opportunity to stage the continent’s premier football tournament.

“I’m sure that since 2008, after we hosted the AFCON, the time is almost near for us to host another AFCON,” he stated.

    Joint hosting proposal

The President also suggested that Ghana could team up with neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire to submit a joint bid for the tournament.

“Maybe, in conjunction with our neighbours, we can come together, ourselves and Côte d’Ivoire, and then host,” he said.

The proposal comes as the government intensifies efforts to modernise sports facilities and position Ghana to host future CAF and other international football competitions.
