Brandon Thomas-Asante says he hopes to earn more starts for the Black Stars after making a decisive contribution in Ghana’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Coventry City forward came off the bench to provide the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner as Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama on Wednesday.
Yirenkyi’s goal handed the Black Stars their first win in seven matches and gave them a perfect start to their Group L campaign.
Reflecting on his performance, Thomas-Asante said he was pleased to have helped the team secure all three points, although he would have welcomed a goal of his own.
“I just wanted to do what I did really. I would have probably liked a goal as well but the main thing was the win,” he said.
The striker acknowledged that competition for places means he will not always be in the starting line-up, but admitted he would like to begin as many matches as possible.
“My style of play means that even when I’m on the bench, there’s often an opportunity to come on and make an impact. Obviously, I would like to start every game, but that’s not always how football works.
“You have to be ready for any occasion, and today my job was to try and impact the game from the bench. I’m happy that I was able to contribute.”
Thomas-Asante also praised his teammates for their efforts before his introduction, highlighting Ghana’s defensive discipline and determination throughout the contest.
“It’s about the team performance because to get to that stage at 0-0, defending solidly and creating a few chances, that is what the team did before I came on. Credit to them and to Caleb for the goal.”
The 26-year-old’s lively display has strengthened his case for a place in the starting line-up as Ghana prepare for a crucial second group match against England on June 23.
