Ghanaian musician Sista Afia has shared new insights into her upbringing, revealing that growing up as a tomboy played a pivotal role in shaping her confidence, bold stage presence, and eventual success in the music industry.
In an interview with Angel FM in Kumasi, the singer explained that many of the qualities fans admire today stem from her childhood environment. “The masculine strength and style that I bring onto the stage is because I was a tomboy,” she said.
Although she is widely known for her glamorous image and commanding performances, Sista Afia noted that her tomboy roots have always been an important influence on her personality and artistry. She added that this background helped her thrive in Ghana’s competitive hip-hop space. “I am also making waves in the hip-hop space because I was a tomboy when I was young,” she remarked.
Beyond music, her childhood shaped her interests and social interactions. Growing up around boys, she developed a passion for football and learned vigilance and resilience — qualities she believes have guided her career. “I played with guys a lot when growing up, and that has made me vigilant. It also makes it easy for me to relate to any guy,” she explained.
Despite her success, Sista Afia stressed that hard work remains central to her journey. “I do my best when I come on stage to perform,” she said, underscoring her commitment to connecting with audiences at every show.
Her reflections offer fans a deeper look into the experiences that shaped one of Ghana’s most recognisable female music stars, highlighting how childhood influences can leave a lasting mark on personal and professional growth.
