Paulo Fonseca fires back at very unfair Endrick criticism amid Lyon form slump

In a passionate response to increasing criticism, Olympique Lyonnais manager Paulo Fonseca has come to the defense of Brazilian forward Endrick, labeling the mounting scrutiny as “very unfair.” The 19-year-old’s recent performance has drawn attention, as his highly anticipated move from Real Madrid was initially seen as a major opportunity for him. Fonseca, however, remains steadfast in his belief that the young player’s development is a process worth safeguarding.

Despite making an impressive debut with a hat-trick against Metz in just his second Ligue 1 appearance, Endrick now faces challenges as Lyon encounters a dip in form, losing three of their last four matches. Critics have begun to target the midfielder for perceived selfishness and decision-making errors, particularly in key moments on the pitch. Fonseca insists that the narrative surrounding the Brazilian is overly narrow, focusing too much on goal tallies and not enough on his growth and adaptation to the French game.

As pressure mounts, Fonseca has taken on the role of protector for his young star. After a lackluster performance in a recent 1-1 draw against Paris FC, where Endrick was unable to make an impact as a substitute, Fonseca reminded everyone of the player’s youth and inexperience. “He is only 19; you expect a lot from him. Endrick spent over a year without playing, and now he is playing almost every match,” he said. Fonseca believes that the expectations placed on Endrick are both excessive and unfair, stating, “When he scores, the evaluation is very positive, but when he doesn’t, the criticism is very heavy.”

Fonseca also highlighted the tactical adjustments required as Endrick transitions to playing on the right wing, citing the challenges in understanding how to best exploit defensive weaknesses. “He always wants the ball, but we need him to make runs behind the defense as well,” the manager explained.

As the season progresses, these young talents face high expectations. Fonseca’s commitment to supporting Endrick suggests a recognition that nurturing talent often involves patience—a key factor in his long-term success amid the trials of a demanding league.
