A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned the party’s General Secretary, calling for a disciplinary review of former presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong over what he describes as conduct that undermines party unity.
The petition was submitted by Charles Opoku, Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for the New Juaben South Constituency, on June 18.
Mr. Opoku accused Mr. Agyapong of repeatedly making public statements against fellow party members and taking positions that contradict official party decisions.
Alleged breach of party constitution
According to the petitioner, the Assin Central lawmaker’s actions violate Article 3 of the NPP constitution, which requires members to remain loyal to the party and protect its reputation.
Mr. Opoku said he has served the party for 14 years and believes Mr. Agyapong’s conduct has damaged the image of the NPP at a critical time as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Criticism over Afari Military Hospital comments
The petition specifically references Mr. Agyapong’s criticism of the NPP Minority Caucus regarding the controversy surrounding the Afari Military Hospital project.
Mr. Opoku alleged that the former presidential aspirant made false claims that weakened the party’s efforts to push for the completion and operationalisation of the facility.
Concerns over ‘The Base’
The petitioner also expressed concern about “The Base,” a group that emerged after the NPP presidential primary.
According to him, the group’s activities outside established party structures have created uncertainty among grassroots supporters and could undermine the authority of recognised party organs.
Threats to release party documents questioned
Another issue raised in the petition relates to a recent media interview in which Mr. Agyapong was reportedly said to have threatened to disclose confidential party documents.
Mr. Opoku claimed the lawmaker had stated that he would “attack the NPP” in June or July 2027 and would not campaign for the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
He argued that such remarks have generated concern among party members and supporters across the country.
Call for party action
The petitioner urged party leadership to review media reports and interview recordings attached to the petition.
He further argued that if Mr. Agyapong possesses information about wrongdoing or corruption within the party, he should present it to the appropriate party bodies or state institutions instead of using it as a public threat.
Mr. Opoku said the petition was filed in the interest of party unity and the long-term success of the NPP.
The petition comes as the party continues efforts to reorganise and rebuild following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
