The 23rd edition of football’s global showpiece began in dramatic fashion at Mexico City Stadium, where Mexico defeated South Africa 2–0 in a match overshadowed by three red cards.
Julián Quiñones opened the scoring in the 9th minute, capitalising on a defensive error from South Africa’s Yaya Sithole to slot past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead in the 67th minute, heading home a Roberto Alvarado cross to seal victory for the hosts.
But the contest quickly descended into ill-discipline:
49th minute: Sithole was sent off for a professional foul on Brian Gutiérrez.
84th minute: South Africa substitute Themba Zwane received a red card after a VAR review for violent conduct.
90+2 minute: Mexican captain César Montes was dismissed for pulling down Khuliso Mudau on a counterattack.
The match ended with Mexico reduced to 10 men and South Africa down to nine, making it the most card-heavy opening fixture in World Cup history.
The opener was preceded by a vibrant ceremony headlined by Shakira and Burna Boy, setting the stage for the month-long competition. Fellow co-hosts Canada and the United States will begin their campaigns on Friday and Saturday, each with their own opening ceremonies.
Defending champions Argentina, who lifted the trophy in Qatar 2022, start their title defence against Algeria on Wednesday.
Mexico’s victory provided a strong start for the hosts, but the rash of red cards ensured the spotlight was as much on discipline as on football. The fiery opener has set the tone for what promises to be an unpredictable tournament.
