Mexico beat young Black Stars side 2-0 in friendly

Mexico defeated a youthful Ghana national football team side 2-0 in an international friendly at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla on Saturday morning.

The match gave several Ghana Premier League players and U-23 prospects the chance to impress ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the game also exposed the team’s lack of experience against a more organised Mexican side.

New Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz and assistant Roger de Sá missed the match because of personal reasons.

Ghana U-20 coach Desmond Offei took charge of the team on an interim basis.

Mexico made a fast start and scored just two minutes into the game.

Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare misplaced a pass under pressure, allowing Mexico’s Brian Gutiérrez to score from long range.

Despite the mistake, Asare recovered well and made several saves to keep Ghana in the game before halftime.

Ghana failed to match Mexico’s intensity in the second half.

Players such as Dacosta Antwi and Manu Duah received opportunities to impress, while substitutes David Oduro and Jerry Afriyie also came on as Ghana searched for a response.

Mexico sealed the victory in the 54th minute when Guillermo Martínez found space in Ghana’s defence and calmly scored past Asare.

The Black Stars created few chances in the closing stages as Mexico comfortably controlled the match.

The result means Ghana have now lost all five meetings against Mexico.

The Black Stars will next face Wales on June 2 before taking on Jamaica on June 10 in further warm-up games.

Ghana continue preparations for their Group L opener against Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
