The Bono Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has donated 115 life jackets to residents and fishing communities in Banda-Bongase in the Banda District.
The donation aims to improve safety on the Bui Dam and protect people who depend on river transport and fishing activities.
Regional Director Fati Kine Lam led the presentation ceremony at the Banda-Bongase boat landing beach.
The donation included reflective life jackets for both adults and children.
Fishermen, market women and commuters who regularly travel on the river received the life jackets.
The event attracted several officials, including Banda District Chief Executive Peter Dongi and other NADMO representatives.
Mrs. Kine Lam said the government remains committed to protecting lives and supporting fishing communities across the region.
She explained that disaster management involves both emergency response and preventive measures.
Mrs Kine Lam encouraged beneficiaries to wear the life jackets whenever they travel on the river.
She also called for stronger cooperation between the Banda District Assembly and the Banda Traditional Council to enforce safety regulations on the waterways.
Area committee chairman Yusif Dauda thanked NADMO on behalf of the community.
He assured officials that residents would follow safety rules and disaster prevention measures.
Mr. Dauda appealed to non-governmental organisations, the Banda District Assembly and other stakeholders to provide additional life jackets.
He said nearly 2,000 people in the area rely on river transport and fishing for their daily activities.
The initiative forms part of efforts to improve safety on local waterways and reduce the risk of accidents in river communities.
