Black Stars midfielder Kwasi Sibo says his greatest ambition is to help Ghana win a major international trophy and end the country’s decades-long wait for silverware.
After an impressive debut campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Sibo has shifted his attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he hopes to help the Black Stars reclaim continental glory.
The 28-year-old believes Ghana has the talent and leadership to compete for the title and restore the nation’s status among Africa’s football powerhouses.
‘I want to win a cup for Ghana’
Speaking about his ambitions with the national team, Sibo said lifting a trophy for Ghana remains his biggest dream.
“There’s always one thing that I want to feel it in my heart. I want the nation to also feel it in their heart. It’s to win a cup for the nation.”
“I think it’s been ages since Ghana won a cup.”
“AFCON is coming. That’s a dream and I want that dream to manifest.”
Sibo also expressed confidence in head coach Carlos Queiroz and the Black Stars technical team.
“I believe in the team. I believe in the coaching staff of Carlos Queiroz that he can let that dream happen for every Ghanaian that have been waiting for ages to see Ghana winning a cup. So that’s one thing that I’m looking for.”
Ending a 45-year AFCON drought
Ghana last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1982, meaning the Black Stars have gone more than four decades without lifting the continental trophy despite reaching several finals and semi-finals.
The prolonged wait has made winning AFCON one of the country’s biggest sporting ambitions.
Sibo’s optimism reflects the renewed confidence surrounding the Black Stars after an encouraging campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup under Carlos Queiroz.
Although Ghana exited the tournament in the Round of 32 after losing to Colombia, the team earned praise for its disciplined performances, resilience and tactical organisation throughout the competition.
World Cup breakthrough
Sibo emerged as one of Ghana’s standout performers during the World Cup.
He impressed after coming off the bench against Panama before earning a place in the starting lineup against England.
The midfielder delivered a composed performance against top-class opponents, including Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, underlining his growing importance to the national team.
His displays highlighted the emergence of a new generation of Black Stars players capable of competing at the highest level.
With AFCON 2027 approaching, Sibo says he is determined to play his part in helping Ghana return to the summit of African football.
For the midfielder, winning a trophy in the Black Stars jersey would represent more than personal success. It would fulfil a lifelong ambition and deliver a long-awaited moment of celebration for millions of Ghanaians.
