Interior Ministry suspends Kantanka Security Services licence over Kwabenya shooting incident

The Ministry of the Interior has suspended the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited with immediate effect following the shooting incident that occurred at Kwabenya in Accra on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The decision follows reports of the alleged use of unprescribed uniforms and the possession and use of firearms and ammunition by personnel of the company while providing private security services.

    Ministry cites possible violations

In a statement dated June 22, the Ministry said preliminary investigations pointed to possible breaches of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571), which govern the operations of private security companies in Ghana.

According to the Ministry, the use of unapproved uniforms, unauthorised possession of firearms and ammunition, and the use of related equipment by private security personnel pose serious threats to public safety and security.

    Company ordered to halt operations

Consequently, the Ministry directed Kantanka Security Services Limited to cease all operations immediately pending the outcome of investigations.

In addition, the Ministry advised institutions and organisations to refrain from doing business with the company until further notice.

The statement also instructed the company to cooperate fully with the Ghana Police Service and provide all information required to facilitate a thorough investigation.

    Suspension linked to ongoing investigations

The Ministry stressed that the suspension is an administrative measure aimed at safeguarding public safety while investigations continue.

It added that authorities would take appropriate action after completing investigations and in accordance with the laws governing private security operations in Ghana.

The suspension comes amid ongoing investigations into the June 21 shooting incident at Kwabenya, which is linked to a succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

Police have already arrested Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena, the younger brother of former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, along with eight other suspects in connection with the incident.
