GTA pushes for stronger Easter Tourism Economy through regional festivals

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in charge of Marketing and Special Duties, Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, has outlined the Authority’s support for the Gomoa Easter Carnival, describing it as part of a broader national strategy to expand and energize domestic tourism activities during the Easter period.

He explained that government is actively exploring ways to make Easter celebrations in Ghana as vibrant and economically impactful as the December festive season, with a focus on extending tourism activity beyond the year-end peak period.

As part of this agenda, he noted that the Authority provided support for several Easter-related events across the country, including activities in the Kwahu enclave, selected programmes in the Volta Region, and the Gomoa Easter Carnival initiated by the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus.

“The Ghana Tourism Authority supported A Plus. You find our logo as partners. One, the honourable launched the Gomoa Easter Carnival at the Labadi Beach Hotel. My CEO, Maame Efua Houadjeto also gave support, in terms of monetary and everything,” he said.

The four-day Gomoa Easter Carnival, held from April 2 to 5 across various communities, formed part of efforts to position the Central Region as an emerging Easter tourism destination. The event featured a blend of music performances, street carnivals, food exhibitions, and cultural displays highlighting the traditions of the Gomoa people.

A star-studded lineup of performers included Samini, Kwabena Kwabena, Ofori Amponsah, KK Fosu, Dada Hafco, Bisa Kdei, Kofi Nti, Bless, and Kwanpa. Others featured were Sarkodie, Kofi Kinaata, Kwaw Kese, Keche, Obaapa Christy, Piesie Esther, Sista Afia, Tinny, Shatta Wale, Kuami Eugene, Amerado, Nero X, Sefa, and Patapaa.

The programme also included bonfire and barbecue nights, art exhibitions, fashion shows, masquerade displays, and a grand durbar of chiefs featuring traditional drumming and dancing.

Organised in partnership with Multimedia Group Limited under a three-year media arrangement, the carnival was designed to secure broad coverage across television, radio, and digital platforms. It was further supported by HotWav phones, with the event positioned as a platform to promote local businesses, artistes, and vendors.

Organisers say the initiative was deliberately structured as an alternative Easter tourism destination to complement the long-established Kwahu celebrations, while boosting economic activity for hospitality operators, traders, and transport services in Gomoa and surrounding communities.

The project aligns with the Ghana Tourism Authority’s wider strategy to diversify tourism offerings across the country, promote domestic travel, and stimulate local economies through event-driven tourism.
