Government halts proposed sachet water price increase

The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry has announced that the anticipated increase in sachet water prices will no longer take effect as previously planned, following discussions with key industry stakeholders.

In a statement released on Monday, April 6, the Ministry praised the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP) for halting the proposed price hike.

“The Ministry assures the public that sachet water prices will remain unchanged for now. Consumers can continue to buy at existing rates,” the statement said.

The planned increase had earlier been announced by NASPAWAP, which cited a global shortage of polymers and rising production costs driven by geopolitical tensions, particularly the situation involving Iran. The association had suggested new prices, including GH¢8 at the factory level and up to GH¢15 for retail.

According to the Ministry, the decision to suspend the increase underscores the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring market stability.

To further address the concerns raised by producers, the Ministry has scheduled a meeting with leaders of GPMA and NASPAWAP on Wednesday, April 8, aimed at finding a long-term solution to the sector’s challenges.

“The Ministry remains committed to working closely with industry players to resolve these issues promptly and sustain market stability,” the statement added.

The move provides temporary relief for consumers, as discussions continue on how to balance rising production costs with the need to keep sachet water an essential source of drinking water for many households affordable.
