The Ghana Meteorological Department (GMet) says no severe rainfall is expected across the country on Thursday, July 2, despite concerns circulating on social media.
The forecast comes after heavy rains earlier this week caused widespread flooding and disruption in several parts of Ghana.
Mostly Cloudy Conditions Expected
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, meteorologist Fred Cudjoe said Thursday’s weather will be mostly cloudy, with a chance of light rain in some areas.
He added that some parts of the country are also expected to experience periods of sunshine during the afternoon.
“For today, we are anticipating it to be mostly cloudy. There is a chance of light rain, but we are not expecting any severe rainfall today. There are some chances for sunshine in the afternoon,” he said.
Cudjoe also dismissed claims circulating on social media that Thursday’s rainfall would be heavier than the downpours recorded earlier this week.
“As people are suggesting on social media that we are going to experience a lot of rain today, even more than what we experienced last Monday, is not entirely the case,” he added.
Public Advised to Stay Prepared
Although no heavy rain is expected, Cudjoe advised residents, especially those travelling or working outdoors, to carry umbrellas or raincoats because of the possibility of light showers and drizzle.
“People who will be carrying out some activities outside can carry an umbrella or a raincoat because we are going to have some drizzle.”
Rain Expected to Return This Weekend
Looking ahead, GMet expects rainfall activity to increase on Friday and Saturday.
However, Cudjoe said the expected rains are unlikely to match the intensity of the heavy downpours that triggered flooding on Sunday and Monday.
“Friday and Saturday is where there are high chances of some rainfall activities. Even though we are going to have this rain, it is not going to be of the same magnitude as last Sunday and Monday,” he said.
