Ghana delivered a determined defensive display to earn a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England in their second Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The result leaves both sides in strong contention for a place in the Round of 32, with qualification set to be decided on the final matchday.
England dominated possession throughout the game, controlling nearly 80 percent of the ball. However, the Black Stars remained organised and disciplined, limiting the Three Lions to few clear-cut opportunities.
The first half offered little excitement in front of goal. England struggled to break through Ghana’s compact defence, with their best chance coming from a looping header by Declan Rice that drifted over the crossbar.
Asare shines as Ghana withstand pressure
England increased the intensity after the break, but Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced several key saves to keep his side level.
Elliot Anderson saw a close-range header blocked, while Anthony Gordon’s effort was comfortably stopped by Asare. Harry Kane also tested the Ghanaian shot-stopper with a low strike, but the goalkeeper reacted well to deny the England captain.
Despite spending long periods without possession, Ghana looked dangerous on the counterattack and came close to snatching a dramatic winner late in the game.
Black Stars nearly steal victory
With less than 10 minutes remaining, Abdul Fatawu broke through on goal after a swift attacking move. Although Ezri Konsa recovered to block his initial effort, Fatawu’s follow-up attempt was inadvertently stopped on the goal line by teammate Antoine Semenyo.
England responded with their best opportunities in the closing stages. Reece James delivered a cross that found Nico O’Reilly at the far post, but his header crashed against the crossbar.
The rebound fell to Kane, who blasted his effort over the bar from a promising position, summing up a frustrating evening for the European side.
Qualification race remains open
The draw keeps Ghana and England in the top two positions in Group L heading into the final round of fixtures.
Ghana will face Croatia in their final group game, while England take on Panama. A draw in those matches would be enough to secure qualification to the Round of 32 for both teams.
For Ghana, the result represents another encouraging performance after their opening victory over Panama and reinforces confidence ahead of a decisive final group encounter.
