The Ministry of Health has secured financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance to pay allowances and salaries to thousands of newly trained health professionals undertaking their mandatory service across the country.

In a statement, the Ministry announced that the clearance covers 14,279 rotation nurses and midwives, as well as 637 medical and dental house officers, providing relief to many health workers who have been awaiting payment.

According to the Ministry, the approval follows months of engagement between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance aimed at ensuring that newly qualified health professionals receive the financial support required as they complete their compulsory rotation and professional training.

The clearance for nurses and midwives covers several key cadres in the health sector. These include Registered General Nurses, Registered Midwives, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Registered Community Health Nurses, and Registered Public Health Nurses, who began their rotations last year and are expected to complete their training later this year.

The Ministry also confirmed that 637 Medical and Dental House Officers will receive their salaries under the approval. The officers graduated from both public and private medical schools, successfully passed the examinations of the Medical and Dental Council, and were officially inducted into service on 12 November 2025.

Officials say the financial clearance will help clear outstanding payment backlogs from previous years. The Ministry explained that the move forms part of a new policy aimed at improving the payment system for health professionals on mandatory service.

“Under the new arrangement, allowances for rotation nurses, pharmacists, and other allied health professionals will be paid monthly, rather than under the previous system where payments were often accumulated and settled at the end of their service period,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Health says the new approach is expected to improve the welfare and motivation of young health professionals while strengthening the delivery of healthcare services across the country.
