Ghana Boxing Authority congress deferred as vetting process continues

The election of a new President for the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has been postponed following the deferment of the Elective Extraordinary Congress originally scheduled for June 4, 2026.

In a statement signed by Samir Captan, Chairman of the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC), the decision was attributed to inadequate funding, the incomplete vetting process, and the ongoing compilation of delegates.

The IMC explained that several aspirants had requested amendments to their submissions, corrections to documentation, and additional time to provide required information, making it necessary to extend the vetting process. A final vetting session has been scheduled at the Accra Sports Stadium, while work continues on compiling the official delegates list. “Due to budgetary constraints, the ongoing compilation of the delegate list, and the need for adequate time to complete vetting and consultations, it has become necessary to postpone the election,” the statement said.

The committee noted that a new date for the congress will be announced after consultations with stakeholders and the completion of vetting.

In a related development, the IMC announced the introduction of a mandatory Fitness-for-Role (FFR) assessment for all aspirants seeking election to the positions of President, First Vice-President, and Second Vice-President. The assessment is intended to strengthen the credibility and integrity of the electoral process and ensure candidates are adequately prepared for leadership responsibilities.

The committee reiterated its commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and constitutionally compliant election. “The Ghana Boxing IMC assures all stakeholders that the vetting and election processes will be conducted with transparency, fairness and strict adherence to the GBA Constitution,” Mr. Captan stated.

The IMC was inaugurated in September 2025 with a mandate to reform and restructure Ghana boxing, improve governance standards, and oversee the organisation of fresh elections for the authority.
