Carlos Queiroz has confirmed that Ghana vice-captain Alexander Djiku will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup due to injury.
The experienced defender arrived at the Black Stars camp carrying an injury sustained during his club duties and has been unable to participate in training sessions with the team.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s pre-World Cup friendly against Wales, Queiroz disclosed that the technical team had taken the decision to replace the 31-year-old centre-back in the final squad.
“We had to make a decision to replace Djiku. It doesn’t matter the player I called, but Djiku has been replaced and you have seen the new player,” Queiroz said.
Following Djiku’s withdrawal, Derrick Lucasson has been drafted into the squad. The defender will now join Ghana’s preparations as the Black Stars put the finishing touches on their campaign ahead of the global tournament.
Djiku’s absence represents a significant setback for Ghana, given his importance to the national team in recent years. Beyond his defensive contributions, he has also played a key leadership role within the squad as vice-captain.
The Black Stars will now look to adjust defensively as they continue preparations for the World Cup, with Lucasson expected to provide additional depth and cover at the back.
