The Ghana Police Service says it has arrested eight suspects linked to the killing of the Queenmother of Abamba in the Atebubu area of the Bono East Region.
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohonu said the arrests followed intensified intelligence-led operations across the country. He said the service has also increased efforts to tackle violent crime and online scams.
He explained that continued police operations in Atebubu have disrupted criminal activity in the area. He added that officers will maintain patrols and targeted operations to protect residents.
“These operations will continue so that law-abiding citizens can go about their lives without fear,” he said.
The Queenmother, Nana Serwaa Gyan Kuma, was killed on 25 February 2026 at her residence after returning from work. She ran a restaurant called Ohema’s Kitchen.
Police said she was shot multiple times as she arrived home. Officers later recovered three spent 9mm cartridges from the scene.
A post-mortem report confirmed she died from severe blood loss caused by gunshot wounds.
Investigators say early breakthroughs came after suspects arrested in Kasoa for a separate robbery case were questioned. One suspect, Abdul Razak Ibrahim Langa, allegedly admitted he was present during the killing and later confessed.
His statement led police to identify Nana Yaw Bediako as the alleged shooter. He reportedly confessed and named Nana Owusu Sankofi II, chief of Akokoa, as the person who allegedly hired them for GH¢50,000.
Police also linked a convicted inmate at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison as an intermediary in the plot. Two other suspects, including a traditional leader and a driver, have also been arrested.
Bono East Regional Police Commander Osei Shaibu said five main suspects are in custody. Three others have been arraigned and remanded by the Techiman District Court.
Investigations suggest the killing was planned using mobile money transactions. Police say funds were used to buy a pistol and ammunition, with additional payments made after the attack.
A reconstruction of the crime scene was carried out on 19 May. Suspects reportedly demonstrated how they ambushed the Queenmother and followed her home before opening fire.
Police also said one suspect attempted to bribe officers with GH¢200,000 during arrest. An initial payment of GH¢100,000 was reportedly made and has been seized as evidence.
