At least 13 people have been confirmed dead, while several others have sustained injuries following a fatal three-vehicle collision at Odumase near Konongo on the Kumasi-Accra Highway in the Ashanti Region.
The crash involved a cargo truck transporting tomatoes, a passenger bus and a fuel tanker that was not carrying fuel at the time of the accident.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
However, eyewitnesses told JoyNews that the collision occurred after an alleged wrongful overtaking manoeuvre, which led to a head-on crash involving the vehicles.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to rescue victims trapped in the wreckage. They transported the injured to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The accident caused heavy traffic congestion along the busy highway as security agencies and emergency workers carried out rescue and recovery operations.
Authorities have confirmed 13 deaths so far, but they warn that the number could rise as rescue efforts continue and critically injured victims receive medical care.
Meanwhile, another road accident occurred shortly afterwards at Dadieso, also near Konongo.
The second incident has renewed concerns over road safety on the Kumasi-Accra Highway, one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors.
Authorities are expected to investigate both crashes to determine their causes and recommend measures to prevent similar tragedies.
