Six people have died and 34 others have been rescued after a series of road crashes in the Volta Region on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the accidents occurred at different locations across the region. Fire officers responded quickly to rescue victims and provide emergency support.
The first set of accidents happened near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road. The area forms part of the Eastern Corridor Road in the South Dayi District.
Personnel from the Peki Fire Station received a distress call at about 12:53 p.m. A team led by Station Officer II Richard Amenyogbeli arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.
Fire officers attended to two crash scenes at the same time.
One crash involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck travelling from Tema to Tamale and a Toyota Camry heading from Nkwanta to Accra. The five occupants, made up of four men and one woman, had already been rescued before the fire crew arrived. Both vehicles suffered partial damage.
Another crash involved a Metro Mass Transit bus travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board.
Fire officers rescued 24 passengers, comprising seven men and 17 women. They were taken to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment.
However, four people, including one man and three women, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were handed over to the Police for preservation and investigations.
In a separate incident, personnel from the GNFS Regional Headquarters responded to another crash at the Civic Centre in Ho.
The team received a distress call at about 1:04 p.m.
The accident involved a Hyundai Mighty truck, a Pragya tricycle and an unregistered motorbike.
Ten victims were rescued and taken to the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Hospital checks later confirmed that two male victims had died from their injuries. This brought the total number of deaths from Sunday’s crashes to six.
The vehicles involved sustained varying degrees of damage. Authorities have launched investigations to establish the causes of the accidents.
Myjoyonline reported that another fatal accident occurred at the same location in Ho on June 13. In that incident, a Hyundai Mighty truck descending the Ola SHS hill crashed into roadside shops and tricycles, killing two people.
