The Ministry of Finance has released GH¢350 million to support emergency flood relief and mitigation efforts following the recent floods that affected several parts of Ghana.

The funds were transferred from the Contingency Fund to the National Disaster Management Committee after President John Dramani Mahama directed the Ministry to mobilise resources for the response.

    Funds Approved by Parliament

According to the Ministry, the withdrawal was made in line with Article 177 of the 1992 Constitution.

Before releasing the funds, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson obtained approval from Parliament through its Finance Committee.

After the approval, the Minister instructed the Controller and Accountant-General to transfer the money to the National Disaster Management Committee for the implementation of the National Emergency Flood Response Programme.

    GH¢200 Million for Relief

The Ministry said the Controller and Accountant-General opened a dedicated account for the National Disaster Management Committee at the Bank of Ghana before transferring the full GH¢350 million.

Out of the total amount, GH¢200 million has been allocated for emergency relief to support flood victims and affected communities.

The remaining GH¢150 million will be used to finance flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the impact of future flooding.

    Government Responds to Flood Disaster

The Ministry said the release of the funds fulfils President Mahama’s directive for an immediate response to the flood emergency.

It added that the funding will provide urgent assistance to affected communities while supporting long-term measures to improve Ghana’s resilience against flooding.
