Ghana have qualified for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite suffering a defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match.
The Black Stars’ place in the knockout stage had already been confirmed before Saturday’s fixture after results elsewhere guaranteed that four points would be enough to progress under FIFA’s expanded 48-team tournament format.
Ghana secured four points from their opening two matches, beating Panama 1-0 before earning a hard-fought goalless draw against England. Those results ensured qualification regardless of the outcome against Croatia.
The Black Stars, however, were unable to finish the group stage on a winning note as Croatia claimed victory in the final group encounter.
Despite the defeat, Ghana advances to the Round of 32, becoming one of the teams to book a place in the knockout stage under the tournament’s new format, which allows the top two teams in each group and the eight best third-placed teams to progress.
Qualification marks a significant improvement from Ghana’s previous World Cup campaign, where the four-time African champions were eliminated in the group stage.
The Black Stars impressed during the group phase, opening with a narrow victory over Panama before producing a disciplined defensive display to hold England to a goalless draw, a result that proved decisive in securing their passage to the knockout rounds.
Attention now turns to the Round of 32, where Ghana will await confirmation of their opponents following the completion of the remaining group-stage fixtures.
The Black Stars will hope to put the disappointment of the Croatia defeat behind them as they seek to extend their World Cup campaign in the knockout stages.
