Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has thrown his support behind the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana will begin its Group L campaign against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, at BMO Field in Toronto, with hopes of making a strong start to the tournament.
Bawumia Backs Black Stars
In a goodwill message to the players and technical team, Dr Bawumia described football as a powerful force that unites Ghanaians and connects people across the world.
“Football has always been a part of us as a nation, it has always united us, and it brings the world together,” he said.
“As the Black Stars start their journey at the 2026 World Cup, I want to wish them the very best.”
The former Vice President expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the challenge and make the country proud on the global stage.
“Black Stars, you have done it before and you can do it again,” he stated.
“The nation is behind you, and I am also behind you. Go Black Stars and go for gold.”
Ghana Open Campaign Against Panama
The Black Stars arrived in Toronto on Monday after completing their preparations in the United States.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical team oversaw final training sessions ahead of the tournament, with the squad reporting no major injury concerns.
Wednesday’s fixture will mark the first-ever senior international meeting between Ghana and Panama.
The Black Stars are seeking a positive result before taking on England and Croatia in their remaining group-stage matches.
Support Builds Ahead of Kick-Off
Dr Bawumia’s message adds to the growing wave of support from political leaders, football stakeholders and Ghanaians at home and abroad as excitement builds ahead of the tournament.
Ghana is making its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup and will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage after exiting in the first round at the 2014 and 2022 editions.
With anticipation rising across the country, many supporters will be hoping the four-time African champions can begin their World Cup journey with a victory against Panama and lay the foundation for a successful campaign.
