GFA set to receive $12.5m from FIFA for 2026 World Cup

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to receive $12.5 million from FIFA to support Ghana’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.

The amount includes $2.5 million in preparation funds for the Black Stars. This marks a $1 million increase from the previous $1.5 million allocated to teams for tournament preparation.

Ghana will also receive $10 million for qualifying for the competition. This is an increase from the $9 million paid during the last World Cup.

FIFA confirmed that it has raised the total prize money for the 2026 tournament to $871 million. The increase follows the commercial success of the expanded competition.

The decision was approved by the FIFA Council ahead of the 76th FIFA Congress held in Vancouver. The new funding package represents a 15 percent increase in resources for participating teams.

Each of the 48 teams will receive higher financial support. In addition to preparation and qualification payments, FIFA will provide subsidies for team expenses and increased ticket allocations.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the organisation is in a strong financial position. He noted that the funds will be reinvested into football to support member associations worldwide.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico. It will be the first edition to feature 48 teams, up from the previous 32.

Despite the increased funding, some concerns remain. European football body UEFA has raised issues about travel costs and logistics. The expanded format and multiple host countries could increase expenses for participating teams.

However, FIFA expects the tournament to be the biggest and most commercially successful in history. With more matches and teams, revenue from sponsorship, broadcasting, and ticket sales is projected to rise significantly.
