Weija Children’s Hospital delayed over procurement dispute

The Ministry of Health has responded to a protest at the Weija Paediatric Hospital, assuring the public that efforts are underway to resolve issues delaying the facility’s opening.

In a press release issued on May 5, 2026, the Ministry said the hospital project, funded by the World Bank, began in 2023 and was scheduled for completion in December 2025. However, concerns raised in 2024 over procurement irregularities have stalled progress.

According to the Ministry, the World Bank flagged cases of misprocurement, including claims that some medical equipment costs were inflated to as much as 11 times their actual value. Following these findings, the Bank declined to settle outstanding payments related to the project.

The Ministry noted that despite engaging stakeholders and preparing to commission the hospital, the contractor halted the process. The contractor insists that all outstanding issues must be fully resolved before granting access to the facility.

Officials say discussions are ongoing to address the impasse. The Ministry emphasised that resolving the matter is in the public interest and remains a top priority.

It also highlighted the importance of the hospital to Ghana’s healthcare system, especially in delivering specialised services for children.

The Ministry assured the public of its commitment to operationalising the hospital as soon as possible. It appealed to residents of Weija and the general public to remain patient while steps are taken to complete the process.
