The Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast has appointed Prof. Denis Worlanyo Aheto as the new Vice-Chancellor of the university, effective August 1, 2026.
The appointment was announced in an official notice issued by the Council Secretariat on May 15, 2026, following a special meeting of the Governing Council.
Prof. Aheto, who currently serves as Acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the university, is expected to formally assume the substantive role in August, succeeding the outgoing leadership.
According to the statement, the decision was reached during Council deliberations, marking a significant leadership transition for one of Ghana’s leading public universities.
The appointment places Prof. Aheto at the helm of the Cape Coast-based institution, which has in recent years expanded its academic programmes, strengthened research output, and deepened its contribution to national higher education development.
Established in 1962, the University of Cape Coast has built a strong reputation for excellence in teacher education, research, and public service training, making it one of Ghana’s foremost tertiary institutions.
The announcement was signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Gideon Enoch Abbeyquaye.
Prof. Aheto had earlier been appointed to serve in an acting capacity after the Governing Council, on September 25, named him interim Vice-Chancellor following directives from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
