Transport operators threaten 20% fare hike over deteriorating Kasoa–Winneba Road

Commercial transport operators have warned that they will increase fares by 20% on the Kasoa–Winneba route from June 29 if government fails to begin repairs on the deteriorating road.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on June 24 by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress and the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana.

    Operators cite worsening road conditions

The transport groups said they are concerned about the poor state of the Kasoa–Winneba Road, which continues to create challenges for drivers and passengers.

They recalled that during a demonstration on June 12, they gave government a two-week ultimatum to start repair works on the road.

According to the operators, no significant action has been taken since the ultimatum was issued.

“The road continues to cause vehicle damage, high fuel consumption, and long delays for drivers and passengers,” the statement said.

    Planned fare increase

The unions warned that transport fares on the route will go up by 20% if authorities fail to begin visible repair works before the deadline.

They explained that the proposed increase is intended to help operators recover rising operational costs.

“The adjustment is to cover the extra cost of fuel and maintenance from using alternative routes and the damage to vehicles,” the statement noted.

    Appeal to government and commuters

The transport operators called on the government and the Ministry of Roads and Highways to take immediate action to prevent the fare increase.

They also appealed to commuters for understanding, stressing that the decision is aimed at protecting vehicles and sustaining their businesses amid worsening road conditions.

The statement was jointly signed by GPRTU National Deputy Public Relations Officer Samuel Amoah, GPRTU Communications Member Eric Larty Lamptey, Communications Member Ben Boahen, and National Chairman of the Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, Asonaba Nana Wiredu.
