The Ghana Police Service has arrested two individuals in connection with the deadly robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus that claimed the life of footballer Daniel Frimpong.
In an official statement, police confirmed that the suspects believed to include the gang leader and an accomplice were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation. Authorities also revealed that one of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during a confrontation with police and is currently receiving treatment under armed guard.
“The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident,” the statement said. It further noted that the injured suspect was taken to hospital following an exchange of fire with police intelligence teams.
The incident occurred on the Bibiani–Goaso road at Ahyiresu as the Berekum Chelsea squad was returning from a Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex 1996. Armed robbers reportedly blocked the road before ambushing the team bus, forcing players and officials to flee for safety.
Daniel Frimpong was shot during the attack and later died from his injuries at Bibiani Government Hospital, a loss that has deeply shaken Ghana’s football community.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over the safety of domestic league travel, with calls for stronger security measures for teams on the road.
Police say investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected as efforts continue to track down all those involved. “Further details will be communicated,” the statement added, reaffirming the Service’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
