A 41-year-old Nigerian woman has been jailed for six months with hard labour. She was convicted for trying to obtain a Ghanaian passport using forged documents.

The Ghana Immigration Service announced the conviction.

The convict, Franca Wilson, works as a welder. She pleaded guilty at the Adabraka District Court in Accra on May 12, 2026. The court convicted her on three counts. The sentences will run at the same time.

Immigration officers arrested her during a routine check at the Accra Passport Application Centre on April 24, 2026.

Officers detected inconsistencies in her documents during the vetting process. This triggered further investigation.

Investigators found that Wilson is a Nigerian citizen. She was born in Rivers State to Nigerian parents.

However, she submitted a fake birth certificate. It claimed she was born in Somanya in Ghana’s Eastern Region. It also claimed she had a Ghanaian mother.

She could not support these claims when questioned.

Authorities also found that she obtained the fake documents through an agent. These included a falsified birth certificate and a Ghana Card.

The Ghana Card carried the ID number GHA-731395447-1.

The agent also helped her complete the online passport application and book her appointment. Wilson later admitted the offences in her caution statement.

After the investigation, she was transferred to the National Enforcement Department of the Ghana Immigration Service for further action.

The Ghana Immigration Service warned foreign nationals against using illegal agents.

It said attempts to obtain Ghanaian identity or travel documents through fraud are serious crimes. The Service said offenders will face strict punishment under Ghanaian law.
