Lawyer asks court to order A-G to grant access to Abu Trica

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor has asked the High Court in Accra to direct the Attorney-General to grant him access to his client, Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, whose whereabouts remain unknown following an extradition order.

The oral application was made after the court ordered Kumi’s extradition to the United States, where he is wanted to face charges in connection with an alleged $8 million romance scam.

    Lawyer says client’s whereabouts unknown

When the case was called on July 6, Barker-Vormawor told the court that neither he nor his legal team knew where his client was being held after the extradition order was granted.

“We still don’t know where our client is being held,” he told the court.

He said he had written to the Attorney-General requesting access to Kumi but had not received a response.

As a result, he asked the court to compel the Attorney-General to allow him to meet his client.

    Court awaits Attorney-General’s response

The High Court stood down the matter to allow the Attorney-General to respond before deciding on the application.

Meanwhile, Barker-Vormawor’s application seeking a stay of execution of the extradition order has been adjourned to July 9, 2026.

    Extradition challenge continues

Abu Trica was rearrested shortly after the High Court dismissed his legal challenge against his extradition.

Security officers immediately took him back into custody to facilitate the extradition process to the United States.

His legal team has since indicated that it intends to challenge the High Court’s decision before the Supreme Court as efforts continue to halt his extradition.
