Chief of Staff apologises to Church of Pentecost over Free Zones CEO remarks

Ghana’s Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has issued a public apology to the Church of Pentecost following controversial remarks by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mary Awusi.

Mr. Debrah, expressed regret over the incident during his birthday thanksgiving service held on Sunday, April 26, at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) Trassaco.

Delivering an emotional address, he acknowledged that comments made by Dr Awusi had been perceived as critical of the church and its leadership.

“A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr Mary Awusi, made an unfortunate remark that came across as being against you,” he said.

“On this occasion, as I celebrate my birthday, I wish to formally extend an apology on behalf of all of us and ask that the entire church forgives us.”

Mr. Debrah described the incident as a “slip of expression” rather than a deliberate attempt to undermine the church, adding that government officials continue to hold the institution in high regard.

“We humbly ask for your forgiveness and acceptance, and we continue to regard ourselves as your children in faith,” he said, appearing visibly emotional.

The apology follows public backlash after Dr Awusi criticised the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost over remarks condemning illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

The controversy sparked widespread reactions, prompting the Free Zones CEO to subsequently issue her own apology.
