Energy Minister to hold urgent briefing after Akosombo fire disrupts power supply

Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, is set to hold an urgent briefing today, Monday, April 27, following major disruptions in the country’s electricity distribution system.

The announcement was made by Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in a post on Facebook.

The briefing comes amid escalating concerns in the power sector after a fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Center on April 23, 2026. The incident knocked between 720 and 1,000 megawatts off the national grid, forcing authorities to suspend electricity exports and triggering a nationwide audit of energy infrastructure.

In response, the minister directed the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to step aside pending investigations into the incident.

The fallout has extended beyond GRIDCo. Authorities have also initiated a leadership shake-up within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region, where widespread outages affected homes, businesses, and industrial operations in the aftermath of the Akosombo disruption.

Today’s briefing is expected to outline the government’s response measures and provide updates on efforts to stabilize power supply nationwide.
