The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has closed sections of the Ashaiman China Mall warehouse over the sale and distribution of suspected substandard products.
The affected sections contained items such as mattresses and electrical appliances believed to have been made with inferior materials.
The operation took place on Tuesday, May 19, as part of the Authority’s ongoing nationwide exercise to remove unsafe and fake products from the Ghanaian market.
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, the Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, said several products failed quality tests conducted by the Authority.
According to him, inspectors sampled about 15 electrical bulbs during the operation, and all were found to be fake.
“It’s not only the mattresses, but we also have issues with the bulbs. We sampled about 15 electrical bulbs, and all of them are fake. These are things that can cause fire in homes of people,” he said.
Mr Kubati added that the Authority would seize the affected products and secure the warehouse while legal processes continue.
“We’re going to pack the mattresses and bulbs, secure them, and lock the warehouse. The law must take its course,” he stated.
The GSA said the exercise forms part of efforts to protect consumers and ensure that manufacturers and distributors comply with national safety and quality standards.
