The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has warned that more thunderstorms and rain are expected across southern Ghana this afternoon, raising concerns that flooding in Accra and other affected areas could worsen.
In its latest 18-hour weather forecast issued on Monday, June 29, GMet said the rain, with or without thunder, currently affecting parts of the coast and a few inland areas is expected to persist throughout the forecast period.
The agency said a weak to moderate rainstorm currently located along the Togo-Benin coast is moving westward and is expected to increase cloud cover over southern Ghana before triggering thunderstorms and rain from the morning into the afternoon.
According to GMet, the weather system is likely to enhance rainfall activity across several coastal and inland communities before gradually weakening later in the day.
For Accra, the forecast indicates a 60 per cent chance of thunderstorms during the morning, followed by rain in the afternoon. Temperatures along the coast are expected to peak at about 30 degrees Celsius.
GMet has also classified the state of the sea as dangerous, warning fishermen, operators of small boats and residents along the coast to exercise extreme caution. Under the agency’s classification, a dangerous sea state is expected when wave heights exceed 2.5 metres.
The warning comes after torrential rains triggered widespread flooding across parts of the Greater Accra Region on Monday morning, leaving major roads submerged, disrupting businesses and stranding motorists.
The Interior Ministry has already advised the public to remain indoors or stay where they are until it is safe to travel, while emergency services continue rescue and traffic management operations in affected communities.
GMet said it will continue to monitor weather conditions and issue further updates as the situation develops.
