Task Force demolishes illegal structures along Tesa Dam to reduce flood risk

The government’s post-flood mitigation task force has begun demolishing unauthorised structures along the banks of Tesa Dam and Legon Boundary Road. The exercise forms part of efforts to reduce flooding in the Greater Accra Region.

The demolition started on Friday, July 24, 2026. It follows several post-flood assessment tours conducted after the devastating June 29 floods that affected many communities across the region.

    Government Targets Flood-Prone Areas

Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources Gilbert Adjei said the exercise is necessary to prevent future flooding. According to him, recent floods have been linked to buildings erected on waterways and wetlands. He also blamed the improper disposal of waste for worsening the situation.

Furthermore, he disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama directed authorities to remove structures blocking the natural flow of floodwaters. The President also ordered the desilting of drains to increase their capacity and improve water flow.

The measures are expected to reduce flooding, particularly around the Motorway and East Legon catchment areas.

Mr. Adjei expressed confidence that the exercise would continue throughout the year to improve flood resilience.

    Residents Received Advance Notice

The Commanding Officer of the 48 Engineer Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Frank Osei Amponsah, said affected residents received a three-week notice before the demolition exercise began.

According to him, the notice gave occupants enough time to vacate the affected structures before the operation commenced.

Government Releases GH¢350 Million for Flood Response

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has released GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and long-term mitigation measures.

The release followed a directive from President Mahama to Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson to mobilise resources for immediate relief and flood prevention efforts.

In line with Article 177 of the 1992 Constitution, Parliament approved the withdrawal before the funds were released.

Subsequently, the Controller and Accountant-General opened a dedicated account for the National Disaster Management Committee at the Bank of Ghana and transferred the full amount.

    Relief and Prevention Measures

Out of the GH¢350 million, GH¢200 million will support relief efforts for flood victims and affected communities. The remaining GH¢150 million will fund flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the impact and frequency of future flooding.

The funding forms part of the government’s emergency response and long-term strategy to strengthen flood management while protecting vulnerable communities.

The demolition exercise and the release of funds signal a broader effort by the government to address the causes of flooding and improve disaster preparedness across the country.
