Ghana moves to coordinate evacuation of nationals in South Africa

Benjamin Quashie, Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, has assured Ghanaians seeking to return home that efforts are ongoing to ensure their safe repatriation.

The assurance follows a viral social media video in which a Ghanaian man appealed for evacuation assistance.

In a Facebook post dated May 21, the Ghana High Commission in South Africa said it had taken note of the video and that the High Commissioner had since engaged the individual involved, identified as Sylvester Boakye.

According to the Commission, Mr. Boakye admitted that he went to the airport on his own without first contacting the High Commission or following the established coordination procedures.

The Mission also dismissed reports suggesting that a chartered aircraft had arrived to evacuate Ghanaians, explaining that no such evacuation flight had taken place due to unresolved procedural and technical arrangements.

“The Mission further assures the Ghanaian community in South Africa that efforts are actively underway to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation process for all persons who voluntarily registered for repatriation,” the statement said.

The High Commission further urged Ghanaians in South Africa who require assistance or clarification to contact the Mission directly.
