The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 60-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his 16-year-old son in a disturbing incident at North Legon in Accra.
According to police, the suspect, identified as Eric Mante, was arrested by the Madina Divisional Police Command after reports of the incident emerged.
Briefing the media, Juliana Obeng, Superintendent of Police and Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, said preliminary investigations revealed that the incident happened on May 3, 2026.
She explained that the teenager had gone out to play football with friends despite repeated warnings from his father.
Police say the suspect confronted the boy upon his return home and allegedly reacted in anger over his conduct.
According to investigators, the father tied the teenager to a quad motorbike and sped off, dragging him along a road near the Adonai Church area.
The victim reportedly fell and was dragged for several minutes, suffering multiple injuries in the process.
Ms Obeng said residents in the area rushed to intervene after hearing the victim’s cries for help. The residents managed to stop the suspect before reporting the matter to the police.
The injured teenager was later taken to hospital for medical treatment, while the suspect was arrested shortly afterwards.
During investigations, the suspect allegedly admitted to the act and told police he acted out of anger after repeatedly warning his son against engaging in such activities.
The Ghana Police Service has condemned the incident, describing it as a serious case of child abuse.
Police also urged parents and guardians to adopt lawful and non-violent ways of disciplining children.
Ms. Obeng further appealed to the public to report cases of abuse promptly to law enforcement agencies to ensure swift intervention.
