The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has called for a return to strict regimentation within the Ghana Armed Forces, describing it as critical to improving operational efficiency and responding effectively to emerging security threats.

Addressing the opening session of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra on Monday, March 23, Lt Gen Agyapong stressed that discipline, adherence to established standards, and respect for the chain of command remain the foundation of a professional and effective military.

He cautioned that the rapidly evolving global and regional security landscape presents increasingly complex challenges, including hybrid warfare, violent extremism, cyber threats, disinformation, and organised transnational crime. These developments, he noted, demand a force that is not only adaptable but firmly anchored in discipline.

“These evolving threats require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain proactive, disciplined, and forward-looking to maintain operational relevance and effectiveness,” he stated.

The four-day retreat, taking place from March 23 to 26, is being held in phases at Burma Camp and Mampong-Akuapem. It is aimed at repositioning the Armed Forces through a renewed emphasis on regimentation, unity, and resilience.

Lt Gen Agyapong further underscored the need for enhanced coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, noting that joint planning and collaboration are essential for successful military operations. He also called for stronger partnerships between the military and other state institutions to build a more integrated national security framework.

Additionally, he encouraged officers to embrace innovation and technology as vital tools in addressing future security challenges, urging a forward-thinking approach to modern defence strategies.
