Ghana’s Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson represented President John Dramani Mahama at the inauguration of Benin’s newly elected President, Romuald Wadagni, during a ceremony held at the Congress Palace in Cotonou, the country’s economic capital.
President Wadagni, who emerged victorious in the April 12 presidential election, officially assumed office after taking the oath of office before the President of the Constitutional Court, Dorothe Sossa. He pledged to serve and protect Benin throughout his constitutionally mandated seven-year term.
The inauguration ceremony attracted more than 6,000 guests, including heads of state institutions, members of constitutional bodies, diplomats, and former Beninese Presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi.
President Wadagni succeeds Patrice Talon after serving for a decade as Benin’s Finance Minister, where he gained recognition for his role in managing and shaping the country’s economic policies.
Following the ceremony, Dr Forson shared a congratulatory message on social media, describing it as an honour to represent President Mahama at what he called a historic occasion.
“Congratulations to the newly inaugurated President of the Republic of Benin, H.E. Romuald Wadagni. It was a privilege to represent President Mahama at this historic inauguration ceremony in Cotonou,” he wrote.
The event also drew senior government officials and dignitaries from across Africa and other parts of the world, reflecting the significance of the transition in Benin’s political leadership.
